Showcase: MediaFiler som pressearkiv hos NIBIO

 

logoNIBIONorsk institutt for bioøkonomi (NIBIO) ble opprettet 1. juli 2015 som en fusjon av Bioforsk, Norsk institutt for landbruksøkonomisk forskning (NILF) og Norsk institutt for skog og landskap.

 

Det nyopprettede instituttet samler forskning og kunnskapsproduksjon om utnyttelse og forvaltning av biologiske ressurser fra jord og hav, matsikkerhet og bærekraftig ressursforvaltning. NIBIO skal bidra til innovasjon og verdiskaping innenfor verdikjedene for mat, skog og andre biobaserte næringer.

Instituttet hadde behov for et pressearkiv som gir presse og forvaltning tilgang til et rikt bildearkiv, men som også har funksjonalitet for å distribuere bildesamlinger knyttet til spesielle mediasaker og pressemeldinger.
Pressearkiv – tematisk og oversiktlig

Pressearkivet er sortert tematisk ved hjelp av nøkkelord, slik at det er lett for brukerne å få oversikt over innholdet i arkivet. Frisøk er også tilgjengelig, slik at brukerne raskt kan finne de bildene de har behov for.

Bildene kan lastes ned i ulike størrelser til ulike bruk, eller legges til et utvalg og lastes ned som zip. Se arkivet her: foto.nibio.no/

NIBIO-pressearkiv

Mediasaker – albumfunksjonalitet for enkel distrubisjon

Bildene til hver mediasak/pressemelding velges ut og samles i eget album. Albumene kan enkelt deles via epost direkte fra MediaFiler, eller linkes til direkte i pressemeldinger.

Mottakerene av albumet kan enkelt laste ned de bildene de trenger, eller laste ned alle filene som zip. Se NIBIO’s Mediasaker her; foto.nibio.no/mediaalbum

NIBIO-mediasaker

Albumfunksjonaliteten gir også mulighet for å lage egne kategorier av nyheter og legge til pressemeldingtekst som følger bildene i albumet. Brukere innad i organisasjonen kan også samarbeide om å legge til/fjerne bilder i albumet, før albumet legges tilgjengelig for gjestebrukere.

Løsningen leveres med en plugin for InDesign og Photoshop som kan installeres på alle arbeidsstasjoner. Denne gir tilgang til alt materiale i arkivet direkte i programmene man arbeider i. Pluginen gir oversikt over arkivet og man kan søke og sette inn bilder, annonser og artikkeltekst med ett klikk.

Enkel og sikker Arkivering

Arkivering av materiale fra produksjonsmapper til arkivet er enkelt: velg elementene som skal arkiveres og send til arkivet. Ferdige avvissider i PDF kan lastes opp til arkivet ved dra & slipp. Arkivet kan tilpasses med f.eks. ønskede mapper, navigasjon via metadatastruktur, spesifiserte søkefelt m.m.

MediaFiler med lagringsplass er skalerbar og man betaler bare for den lagringsplassen man trenger. Våre leide arkivløsninger ligger på sikre servere, der drift og sikkerhetskopiering blir tatt hånd om som en del av avtalen.

Funksjonalitet og tilpasning

Systemet kan tilpasses med logo og fargetema for å passe avisens profil. Systemet settes opp med de mappene og navigasjonsvalgene som ønskes, samt tilpasses med ønsket funksjonalitet og brukerprofiler. Alt i fra et lukket arkiv med mye funksjonalitet til enkle åpne arkiver med bestillingsfunksjon, eller en kombinasjon, er mulig.

NIBIO-en

The Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO) was established 1 July 2015 and is one of Norway’s largest research institutes. NIBIO is owned by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and is a merger between the Norwegian Institute for Agricultural and Environmental Research (Bioforsk), the Norwegian Agricultural Economics Research Institute (NILF) and the Norwegian Forestry and Landscape Institute (Skog og landskap).

NIBIO’s Press Archive on MediaFiler

NIBIO delivers research and managerial support  in bioeconomics. The goal of the Institute is to contribute to food security, sustainable resource management, innovation and value creation through research and knowledge production within food, forestry and other biobased industries.

The institute needed a press archive giving media and governmental institutions access to a rich image archive, which also had the possibility of creating albums with image collections to be distributed in connection with press releases and stories produced for the media.
Press archive – thematically organized

The press archive is sorted thematically by keywords, to make it easy for the users to get an overview of the contents of the archive. Free search is also available, so that the users fast and easy can find the images they need.

The images can be downloaded in different sizes for different use, or added to a selection and downloaded as ZIP. See the archive here: foto.nibio.no/

Media stories – album functionality for simple distribution

The images for each press release/media story are selected and collected in an own album. The albums are easily shared via email directly from MediaFiler, or are linked to directly in the press releases.

The album functionality also makes it possible to make own categories of news and add a press release text which will follow the images in the album. Users within the organisation can also cooperate about adding/removing images in the album, before it is made available to the public.

National Tourist Routes in Norway wanted a photo library which was fast and easy for visitors to use. With MediaFiler they were blown away!

National Tourist Routes in Norway is a part of the National Public Roads Administration in Norway. Their project is to provide characteristic routes across Norway with spectacular viewpoints which serve as a natural resting point for travelers. The viewpoints include service buildings, car parks, paths and art. So far there are 18 unique viewpoints.

Customized look & layout

With 18 routes around Norway, the National Tourist Routes wanted a showcase for their many images, where visitors could easily browse and download images for use in publications regarding the project.

MediaFilers modular and flexible solution comes with many adjustable templates. Our customer wanted a clean dark look which was well suited to show off the images in their archives. We customized the look with i.e. their logo, large preview images and a home page.

Since the location of where the images where taken is key to this archive, we added a home page featuring an overview of all 18 routes – with preset searches to find all images from each location. On the preview page we also added functionality for seeing more images from the same location as the viewed image.

In order to make the archive easy to use for new visitors, the shown metadata fields were restricted to only the necessary fields, unnecessary functionality was hidden and we set up fixed download sizes.

Design and Settings –
customizing archives which are open to the public

Making small adjustments to design and including corporate logos and color profiles makes it possible to integrate your public image archives seamlessly in your corporate web pages. Adjusting settings and layout options to suit your company and your visitors’ needs, further enhances usability and consistency. In archives open to the public it is also important to be able to control what information (metadata) is released on the images shown as well as customizing download rights and image sizes open for download. Some times the needed functionality cannot be covered by existing “off the shelf” software alone. PressIT provides the possibility of offering customized software, with development of additional modules. First and foremost our software development covers:

  • ViArchive, solution for archiving, extracting and transcoding of video files
  • Customization of archives; layout/design +  extra functionality with plugins
  • Additional modules to other solutions for archiving of text and images (i.e. add-ons for customization of indexing, metadata adjustment and retrieval workflows)

The customers’ needs can often be met with affordable and available software based on common standards, combined with assistance in establishing correct and effective workflow – and a certain amount of customization for an optimal solution.

Where our capacity or competence does not suffice, we will draw on cooperation with other development companies. One of our partners is Knowlex.  Knowlex has specialized in developing database interfacing, connecting with other server based functionality and communication solutions like SOAP and REST services, and plug-ins for desktop applications. Knowlex has done work for several of the larger players in the publishing and media marketplace. Example: Flash module for Web

For The Norwegian Forest and Landscape Institute, in a project called “Tilbakeblikk” (norwegian for “looking back”), we developed a web flash module for showing the changing of landscapes in Norway over time. Every location has been photographed from the same standpoint twice, and many old photographs have been recaptured to show changes. The project aims to illustrate and create awareness about landscape changes in Norway.

The flash module includes an interactive map showing the location of the photographed landscapes, functionality for comparing the images of the changing landscapes and pdf download of fact sheets. The module supports multiple languages. Image files and PDF documents are managed in the background by an image archive.

Metadata Uploader

The Metadata Uploader is a module which allows for uploading of media files with customized obligatory metadata fields in image archives with browser access.

On upload the user selects the files and drops them into the Metadata Uploader. Then the user inserts the required metadata and further optional fields if wanted. The files can only be uploaded when all obligatory fields have been filled.

This module is especially useful in environments where the metadata fields are very specific and has crucial importance for effective searches later on (i.e. established case number systems). By making it obligatory to insert this metadata on upload, large numbers of non-indexed files or inconsistently indexed files will no longer be a problem.

The module can be customized to include only a few demanded fields – or a larger number of fields with instructions for what needs to be entered. The Metadata Uploader demands no installation on the client, only on the server.
